Win Forever by Pete Carroll

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, it is a habit."- Aristotle

"Are you willing to adjust your focus to create the changes and reach the potential that you already own?"

-Pete Carroll

Pete Carroll, the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks and formerly the coach at USC, has an infectious enthusiasm. In this book, he explains his overarching philosophy and how it contributes to success on and off the field.

The most compelling parts of this book are about how he developed his personal philosophy. After being let go by the New England Patriots, Carroll describes a period of reflection and introspection. He re-reads a book by the legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden and is struck by the fact that although his teams won 11 championships, they did not win a championship until his sixteenth season. A key factor Carroll discovers is Wooden putting on paper and sharing the principles and practices he has learned and believes in - both in sports and in life. Carroll begins a process of thinking through his core beliefs and committing them to writing – resulting in a philosophy he communicated widely and leveraged at USC and in community work through A Better LA. In his case, the central theme is always competing – not only in games, but in preparation, in recruiting, and daily in practice as well.

Takeaway

Carroll's return to the NFL, in advance of heavy sanctions for USC from the NCAA, raises questions about his years there. Still, this book highlights the importance of thinking through - and writing down - your own personal operating philosophy – what you believe in, what you stand for and what differentiates you. He suggests creating a version to articulate your philosophy in 25 words or less.

Carroll writes that a "clear, well-defined philosophy gives you the guidelines and boundaries to stay on track" and keeps you in touch with your longer range vision and goals through using strategic reminders and building supporting habits.

Do you have your personal operating philosophy on paper?
